The Pantry of Broward Turns One Year Old

The Pantry of Broward is now one year old.  In July of 2008 The Pantry of Broward opened its doors to serve and support its clients by providing food and support services to seniors in need on low fixed incomes and grandparents raising grandchildren in Broward County.   Founded by BJ Buntrock and CEO Penny Loughan, The Pantry of Broward was created to help these two underserved populations of our community.  Now after one year The Pantry of Broward is serving over 300 clients every month.

 One of our clients is Adeline, a mother and grandmother, who will be 80 years old in September. Adeline lived in New York for over 30 years; she raised two sons and worked as a nurse’s technician and aid in a local hospital.  After retiring she relocated to Florida, initially living with one of her sons in Orlando.  After a period of time, she realized that she wanted to be independent and have some privacy. 
Adeline knew it would be financially difficult to make it completely on her own on the small social security check she was receiving.  She applied for Section 8 housing assistance and after waiting for three years for an apartment to open up, her prayers were answered.

She is so grateful for the added help from The Pantry of Broward.  If not for the additional food and support assistance, Adeline would not be able to make ends meet.  “I don’t really like to cook, so I open the food box and I can warm up items and make simple meals for myself.”
Adeline, like so many other seniors in our community, worked hard all her life, paid taxes, raised a family and simply wants to live her golden years as an independent and proud woman.  These are our clients.

Graciela Valdes, CPP is a professionally credentialed, published, and award-winning portrait photographer specializing in Personal Branding, Boudoir and Family portraiture. She holds a Bachelor Degree from Florida International University and a Professional Certification from Professional Photographers of America. Graciela is involved in the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce as Chairperson of the Lunch Bunch Leads Group and is on the Board for the Women’s Council where she serves as Co-Chair of the Community Outreach Committee.  Graciela enjoys donating much of her time and services to various local charities, including Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center, PACE Center for Girls, Tomorrow’s Rainbow and VACC Camp. She and her life partner, Tim, are parents to elementary school-age twins, two adult children and have a toddler granddaughter.
