Broward’s largest business organization fights legislative power grab

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: Liz Beeble, Director of Communications, 954/462-4139

The largest business organization in Broward County is calling on lawmakers to slam the door on legislation that would devastate home rule throughout Florida. The Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce is opposed to House Bill 17, which would strip local governments of their power to pass new regulations on businesses and abolish current regulations not specifically authorized by state law.

“The state is attempting to usurp local governments’ ability to govern businesses within their own territories,” said Government Affairs Committee chair Jon Polenberg, of Becker & Poliakoff. “The uncertainty the proposal triggers would be detrimental to the businesses the Chamber serves.”

The Chamber believes locally-elected officials must be charged with regulating local businesses, rather than being micromanaged by the Florida Legislature. Employers should not be forced to appeal to the state for minor administrative matters that could easily be addressed within the community.

“The bill is unworkable given the complexities regarding the businesses that operate in our community,” said Polenberg.

We urge lawmakers to promote an environment in which business can thrive and vote “no” to HB 17.

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce is comprised of over 1,300 companies representing more than 295,000 employees throughout South Florida.
