Sports & Recreation

With an average daily temperature of 77°F in the winter and 89°F in the summer, South Florida is a sports enthusiast’s paradise. Outdoor activities are endless with more than sixty golf courses, hundreds of parks, miles of coral reefs and of course, the ever-present Florida sunshine.

Boating, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing and cruising are just some of the great ways to spend your free time in the area. For more water action, rent a power boat, water skis or a Jet-ski from a variety of local marinas and see for your self why Fort Lauderdale is known as the “Venice of America.”

Spectators enjoy all of the major league sporting team action in the area. The Miami Heat play just a short drive away at the waterfront American Airlines arena. With the recent addition of fan favorite Shaquille O’Neal, the team is on their way to an NBA championship. Additionally, the Miami Dolphins and Florida Marlins take center stage at Miami’s Dolphins Stadium.

Several area organizations work together to provide safe and enjoyable recreational facilities for the entire community. The Broward County Parks and Recreation Division maintains over thirty parks, providing safe and exciting fun while preserving natural areas. The City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department offers activities and events for all ages. Several Greater Fort Lauderdale municipalities also feature Parks and Recreation divisions for community enjoyment. From swimming instruction to nature camps, the area is home to a plethora of recreational opportunities.

BASEBALL

Florida Marlins

Since they first stepped out onto the baseball diamond in 1993, the Marlins have provided fun and exciting baseball each and every summer. South Florida has long been a “spawning ground” for future MVP’s with its Spring Training programs, and the 1997 and 2003 World Series Champion Marlins are sure to continue in that tradition. With South Florida homeowner Jeffrey Loria, as their owner and Dolphins Stadium just a short trip down the coast, the team will no doubt keep Major League Baseball a South Florida fixture for years to come. For ticket or schedule information, call (877) MARLINS or visit www.floridamarlins.com.

Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles return to south Florida for their 10th season of spring training, with 14 home games at Fort Lauderdale Stadium.

Tejada led the majors with 150 RBI last season, while Mora finished 2nd in the league with a .340 batting average. And Palmeiro, who grew up in nearby Miami, already ranks 10th on baseball’s all-time home runs list with 551, and needs just 78 more hits to become the latest member of the 3,000 hit club.

Workouts are free and open to the public from February 19 until games begin on March 3. Among the Orioles’ 14 contests this spring are two games each against the World Champion Boston Red Sox and National League Champion St. Louis Cardinals.

Fort Lauderdale Stadium is located at 1301 N.W. 55th Street. For ticket information, call the stadium box office at (954) 776-1921, or go to www.orioles.com.

SCUBA DIVING/SNORKELING

The sub-tropical South Florida climate is perfect for enjoyable diving and snorkeling all year round. The warm weather and waters make our area a haven for water enthusiasts. The region’s offshore marine environment draws divers and snorkelers from around the world. Greater Fort Lauderdale was named one of the “Top Ten World’s Best Wreck Diving, Marine Life and Value Dive Destination” by the readers of Scuba Diving magazine.

Within Greater Fort Lauderdale, beneath the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean, there are dozens of coral encrusted shipwrecks. The underwater world features wonderful wreck diving with depths ranging from 30 feet/10 meters to 60 feet/18 meters. More than 100 dive sites feature permanent mooring buoys to reduce anchor damage.

The region also offers a three-tiered barrier reef system featuring coral reefs, colorful fish and marine life. The first reef line is between 30 to 40 feet, the second is between 50 to 60 feet and the third is between 100 to 130 feet. The three reef lines provide unique diving experiences usually not found in one area.

The Broward County Department of Planning and Environmental Protection has created over 75 artificial reefs in Broward County’s ocean waters. The diving-oriented artificial reefs are diverse in the levels of difficulty. Designed to create a new stable environment, the reefs are constructed with an array of materials including ships, oil rigs and barges. It is important to practice conservation and courtesy when diving so that the reefs can continue to benefit the entire diving community.

The many area coral reefs provide exceptional snorkeling. Just beyond the coastline, from Deerfield Beach in the north to Hallandale Beach in the south, you will discover colorful fish and exciting marine life. Several scuba, dive and snorkeling centers are located in the area offering local dive boats, glassbottom boat tours, guided snorkeling tours and much more.

Gregg Wallick

CEO
Best Roofing

Catholic Hospice’s Wishes Granted Program allows patients to live out their last wish and it is our mission to make it happen. On Friday, February 5th one of our social workers contacted the Community Relations office regarding a patient who was in dire need of a roof repair. The patient lives alone and has been under our care for various weeks. He had a roof leak and was very worried that he would have to leave his home and move. I immediately contacted Tina Kapp, of Best Roofing, who I had met at the last Biz2Biz leads group meeting, and explained our patient’s problem. After getting the approval from Gregg Wallick, Tina called me and on Tuesday, February 9th Best Roofing went to our patient’s home and repaired the leak at no cost. We cannot express our gratitude to Wallick  of  Best Roofing for their support towards our mission. Their help and quick response made a difference for our patient and he was grateful that he could stay in his home.

Tedd C. Simmons, Ph.D
CEO & Managing Principal
The Curtiss Group International
Trustee Member

Imagine the feeling you'll get, knowing you have helped support families affected by congenital heart defects. Tedd knows that feeling because of his generous contributions to Angel’s Pediatric Heart House (www.aphh.org). APHH, a trustee member, is a non-residential, congenital heart defects support community. It is a place where the entire family—parents, CHD child, siblings and relatives—can come together and join others affected by CHD to give hope and encouragement and to share their experiences. Tedd, you are a hero and we thank you for making a difference.

Heroes don’t just wear capes, they sometimes wear tool belts or business suites, or jeans and t-shirts. Heroes are those who donate their time, there resources, their efforts to better a needy person’s life. Our heroes are for-profits who help non-profits achieve their goals. Are you one of these heroes!
