Broward College's President Armstrong Announces Retirement

Dear Friends,

After more than 10 years of having the greatest challenge and honor of my professional life in serving as president of Broward College, and 33-plus years of working in our state’s college system, the time is right for me to retire. It is not easy to walk away from a job that has brought me such professional and personal satisfaction. However, I firmly believe that I will leave the College in a great position with an outstanding leadership team and faculty in place to transition the institution into its next chapter.

With this letter, I am informing you of my retirement plans and intention to leave the president’s position effective June 30, 2018. Until then, I will continue to passionately lead Broward College with our leadership team, as well as provide the board with any support and assistance to help them recruit an outstanding pool of candidates for them to consider as the next president. While I am healthy and have many future interests including international education, international relations, entrepreneurship, and business ventures -- as much as anything, I hope to one day return to the classroom after taking some time for study and scholarship.

These last 10 years have seen great success at the College and, for that, we can all be proud. We have an exceptional and passionate faculty who help our students learn and succeed every day in the classroom and a student support team of advisors and many other professionals who assist students with tutoring, counseling, and so many other roles. We also, of course, have a world-class executive leadership team. They collectively, along with the many emerging leaders at the College, have led the institution to greatness in my tenure in the position and they will help the new president continue the success of Broward College.

Thank you all for challenging me and supporting me to be my best for our students and our community. Without your support, these 10 years would not have been possible. We’ve come a long way in 10 years, but we still have work to do. We will work with passion for our mission and goals until I leave June 30, and then we will all do everything we can to support the success of the new president.

With gratitude,

J. David Armstrong, Jr.
President, Broward College
