Chamber focuses on success after solid 2014
In my seven plus years at our Chamber there has never been a time filled with such optimism. Unemployment at 4.5 percent, construction and real estate moving, 67 months of tourism expansion, fuel prices on the way down and so much more.
Our recently completed Annual Meeting presented by the Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, added to our excitement. We celebrated the litany of achievements by Linda Cooke, Habco Manufatcuring, where she received the Carolyn M. Michaels Leadership Award, and honored the outstanding service of our General Counsel, Suzanne Bogdan, Fisher and Phillips, with the Chair's Award.
Dr. David Altig, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, presented compelling information that suggests while we will see an increase in interest rates this year our South Florida economy should continue to expand along with the rest of the nation.
After a strong 2014 under the leadership of Courtney Crush, Crush Law, we look forward to another impressive year under helm of Calvin Glidewell, CEO, Broward Health Medical Center. Glidewell's first Board of Directors meeting is this Thursday where we are set to approve our program of work and operating budget. Our Council of Economic Advisors' report will be delivered and the first reports from our work groups, councils and committees will be opined.
Several new and returning programs are slated for this year, including:
- Washington Summit 2015
- Inter-City Visit to Durham, NC
- Healthcare Summit and Healthcare Heroes Program
- The Guide to Greater Fort Lauderdale semi-annual publication
You will also have the opportunity to engage in over 200 programs, products and services. Make sure to take advantage of steep discounts to Office Depot and FedEx through Chamber Perks.
Next month several community leaders and I will be in Tallahassee to work on Port Everglades expansion funding and approvals. As with any legislative issues we must be at the table instead of on the table.
In February open enrollment occurs for volunteer involvement. Investors will have an opportunity to register for consideration to be part of our 31 councils, committees, and advisory groups. The strength of this organization is directly related to outstanding volunteer leadership, administration and execution. Without all three working in concert we will not be successful.
The progress we make this year will set the stage for generations to come. Please join us.
