Best of Times & The Worst of Times

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce's Council of Economic Advisors met for the first time in 2019 and some worries have carried over from last year. As the Chamber strives to help initiate programs that will improve workforce development, many members of the council continue to stress the need to find employees with skills sets in construction, marine and entertainment to name a few.

Mike Weymouth, President of The Las Olas Company, had some words that resonated around the room. Weymouth explained our current economic situation as the "best of times and the worst of times." He and several members of the council spoke on the record-low unemployment rate in Broward County and across the state of Florida. Weymouth added that there's "a whole lot of cannibalism" going on, when it comes to hiring. The group stressed that while it's good that a record number of Floridians have work, it's almost impossible to find a skilled talent pool as we begin 2019.

As in every meeting, members were polled on several questions to gain insight on what they expect in the year ahead. Here's a look at the numbers gathered from the 16 members, who voted.
