Research and workforce development bright

I am more convinced than ever that education is key to economic growth and prosperity.  Over the years South Florida has been undervalued when it comes to our focus on learning.  However, our future looks bright and we have the right leadership in place to raise the bar.

Our college and university presidents are first rate and focused on producing top talent and research.  We know that our ranking as a region for post secondary education is critically linked to our research capabilities.  It also is directly connected to job creation and our ability to retain and recruit high paying position in our core strategic markets.

Florida Atlantic University has an impressive lineup of research that has received international recognition. For example, student researcher Edith Nagy was a member of a research term in Dr. Salvatore Leporeís laboratory that discovered a novel chemical reaction with the potential to facilitate the production of therapeutic amino acids.  This could ultimately lead to new and better ways to treat a wide variety of illnesses.

Nova Southeastern University President George Hanbury recently addressed Chamber Trustees, Chairmanís Circle members and Directors regarding his vision.  Nova is developing a 208,000 square foot Center for Collaborative Research (CCR).  This state-of-the art cooperative center will be the focal point of NSAís medical, pharmaceutical, dental and oceanographic research.  It will also house one of the largest wet-lab facilities in Florida.

The CCR will be home to the Rumbaugh-Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research, Florida LambdaRail, information and technology services, investigators from NSUís Health Professions Division and Oceanographic Center, and the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Most recently, Broward College has been ranked amount the top 10 percent of community colleges nationwide for the past two years based on student success indicators by the Washington, DC based Aspen Institute and continues to be consistently ranked in the top 10 produces of degrees nationally.

We celebrate and support the leadership of our educational institutions and look forward to working with them on a variety of programs and projects in the future.
