Stepping Up

With all that has happened in South Florida, both in the private sector and the public sector, one has to imagine what it will take to turn things around.  Now more than ever, it is paramount that ethics reform takes center stage.

Palm Beach County created a Division of Inspector General back in 2005.  This position doesn’t necessarily ensure a “clean” structure, however, it does maintain a level of necessary scrutiny.  Should rules and oversight extend to government employees—absolutely.

Last week, Broward Mayor Ken Keechl addressed the Downtown Council and he clearly understands the perception and need for additional layers of accountability.  Bottom line is that anything that would give way to the appearance of impropriety should be eliminated.  The fact of the matter is that our track record of corruption speaks for itself.  I would think all commissioners and staff would welcome the shield of clearly defined rules, leaving no doubt of the high road.

If County Commissioners fail to approve an ethics code within 180 days after being presented to them, voters will have the final say come November 2010.  Let’s hope our elected officials step up and do the right thing.

Best Regards,
