Women’s Council Provides Day of Pampering and Family Portraits for Women In Distress of Broward County

On Saturday, February 18th, the Women’s Council of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, whose mission includes empowering women through community outreach, hosted a day of pampering and a family portrait session for 27 mothers and children, domestic violence survivors at Women in Distress of Broward County, Inc.

Event partner Lee Loo Salon provided each mom with professional hair styling, make-up application and a manicure, followed by a family portrait session with professional photographer, Graciela Valdes Fine Art Photography. A craft and play section was set up for the children while their moms got camera-ready.

“We wanted these strong mothers to see themselves in beautiful light and have a lasting visual reminder to keep with them always,” stated Graciela Valdes, event coordinator, Women’s Council. “Sometimes it can be hard to smile when one is in the midst of trauma, but we hope these few hours of relaxation and the memory of this unforgettable experience stays with them.”

“It only takes a moment to make a difference in someone's life,” added Karen Prescod, chair, Women’s Council. “Hope is powerful and gives us the courage to want more, the belief to be more, and the strength to do more. I saw these women open up and become filled with gratitude and appreciation for the beautiful moments that were created for them. I watched them pull from deep within to smile for the family photos and see their joy as they viewed their portraits. Giving our time is nothing compared to the gifts we get from back from our service to others," she added.

Breakfast was sponsored by Gordon Property Management and a full lunch was provided by Panera Bread. Lee Loo Salon provided all beauty services. Other sponsors included PNC Bank, Minuteman Press Wilton Manors, SCS Weight Loss and Wheelhouse Art.
