The Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at Cleveland Clinic Florida Achieves National Accreditation

Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Bariatric and Metabolic Institute has been designated a Comprehensive Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®). Accreditation acknowledges the hospital’s commitment to providing and supporting quality improvement and safety efforts for patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery.

“We are honored to have once again earned this designation, as it reinforces our clinical success and ability to achieve the highest standards for patient safety and quality of care,” said Wael Barsoum, M.D., CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic Florida. “Cleveland Clinic Florida is committed to helping patients achieve their weight loss goals by providing multidisciplinary, patient-centered care.”

A joint program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the MBSAQIP designation confirms that Cleveland Clinic Florida met essential criteria for staffing, training and facility infrastructure and protocols for care. The Bariatric and Metabolic Institute also participates in a national data registry that yields semiannual reports on the quality of its processes and outcomes, identifying opportunities for continuous quality improvement.

“Cleveland Clinic’s unique model of medicine brings together a multidisciplinary team that works in concert to ensure our patients receive the highest quality care and have the necessary tools to support their needs when making life-long changes for better health,” said Raul Rosenthal, M.D., Director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at Cleveland Clinic Florida. “I’m proud of our team for earning this accreditation and for helping more than 6,000 patients on their weight-loss journey.”

Cleveland Clinic’s Bariatric and Metabolic Institute (BMI) was previously accredited as a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. In 2006, Cleveland Clinic Florida’s BMI was the first hospital-based weight-loss surgery program in Florida to earn level 1 accreditation from the ACS Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program, both precursors to the MBSAQIP.

The Bariatric and Metabolic Institute consists of an interdisciplinary team of surgeons, physicians, anesthesiologists, psychologists and counselors, specialized nurses, special dietitians, coordinators and more who collaboratively work together to provide superior patient care.

The program offers monthly information sessions about surgical weight loss options where participants can meet with registered dietitians, program coordinators and insurance authorization specialists to have questions addressed by experts. In addition, Cleveland Clinic Florida offers a variety of support groups for patients to discuss common experiences and valuable information pertinent to bariatric surgery, nutrition and lifestyle.
