State session and impressive programs

The Florida Legislature is in session, municipal elections are tomorrow and your Chamber is moving full steam ahead on a number of new initiatives focusing on growing our region.

With one week under its belt, state senators approved sweeping ethics reform and continue to look at the healthcare reform.  The Senate Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) Committee will meet today to review Florida’s Medicaid options.

Sun Life Stadium expansion and renovation efforts moved forward on Friday during a tough fight in the House.  A House panel approved a measure that would guarantee $3 million a year in state money for the next 30 years despite opposition from some South Florida politicians.  Companion bills have already moved in the Senate.

This week many Broward County leaders will head to Tallahassee for Broward Days, March 12-13.  We continue to focus on key economic issues as it relates to the expansion of Port Everglades and other transportation systems like All Aboard Florida and the Wave.  With sea turtle nesting season here, our Friends of the Beach team will be meeting with state regulators in early April to reach common ground, striking a balance between ecology and economics.

But we are not stopping there…in October, delegates head to Washington, DC, in order to drive our message home to the Administration, Congress and key stakeholders.  What we have learned is that we lose if politicians do not hear from us on a consistent basis.

Speaking of timely…this week we have six events in five days.  This month Chamber members have over 53 different venues in which to refer and gain business, learn about economic gardening, help shape the direction and future of your Chamber, and much more.

On April 5 we salute George Hanbury, president of NSU, as our 2013 Downtowner of the Year—presented by Nova Southeastern University.  At the end of the month the Chamber’s Annual Golf Classic, April 26, at Coral Ridge Country Club will surely sell out.

Your Chamber thrives with outstanding volunteer leadership, a committed and vibrant membership, nearly 200 programs, products and services, and a dedicated management team with over 100 years of collective experience.  It’s no wonder why we are leading the way.  Spread the word.
