Greater Fort Lauderdale's Unemployment Rate Continues Steady Drop

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity announced Broward County's jobless rate was 2.6% last month (November 2019). This rate is 0.5% lower than our region's year ago rate.

Non-agricultural employment in the Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach Metro Division was 879,500 last month, an increase of 11,200 jobs (+1.3%) over the year. The unemployment rate within the Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach Metro Division was also 2.6% for November 2019.

As unemployment continues to tick down, wage increases remain stagnant within Broward County. Over the past year, workers have seen average wage increase of 3.3%. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Other services (+8.7 percent) and financial activities (+3.7 percent) industries grew faster in the metro area than statewide over the year.
  • Highest annual job growth compared to all the metro areas in the state in other services (+3,400 jobs) and financial activities (+2,300 jobs) in November 2019.0
  • Second fastest annual job growth rate compared to all the metro areas in the state in other services (+8.7 percent) in November 2019.
  • Industries gaining in jobs over the year were: other services (+3,400 jobs); education and health services (+3,300 jobs); professional and business services (+2,800 jobs); financial activities (+2,300 jobs); leisure and hospitality (+1,600 jobs); and construction (+100 jobs).
  • Trade, transportation, and utilities (-1,400 jobs); manufacturing (-500 jobs); information (-200 jobs); and government (-200 jobs) industries lost jobs over the year.

Across the State

 

Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.1 percent in November 2019, down 0.1% from the October 2019 rate, and down 0.1 percentage point from a year ago. There were 323,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 10,492,000.
