Give Power Away

There are three months left and you have some decisions to make.  If you are like most of us, time is of the essence.  The only thing you have control over is who you spend your time and how you interact within those time blocks.

Here is my partial to do or to go list: Board of Directors meeting (today 4:00), Vote No On 4 Rally (Sept. 30), Trustee Reception at Nova University (Sept. 30); 2011 budget draft (ongoing); hiring a new salesperson; Beach and Downtown Council Luncheon (Oct. 1); Taste of the West (Sunday, Oct. 3), publish the Centennial Guide to Greater Fort Lauderdale, Visioning Committee with the City of Fort Lauderdale, Rock/Jazz the Hall (Oct. 7), staff evaluations, find a keynote speaker for 101st Annual Meeting, Candidate Screening, wife's birthday, implement Membership Committee's on-boarding process...the list goes on.

The point is I would never be able to accomplish my lists without help.  Work and life can get the best of us if we don't prioritize and engage others.  I have a wonderful staff who is doing more with less.  Unfortunately, we are working under the "don't mind the mule, just load the wagon" philosophy.  Last year a few economists indicated that American businesses were more productive than any time in history; however, it is difficult to tell how long companies would be able to sustain that productivity.  Us mules are tired but we can see the end of the road.

I learned a long time ago that the best thing you can do is give power away.  It strengthens others and allows you to accomplish more. 

An example courtesy of Dell, Inc.: My daughter’s laptop had multiple hardware failures over several years.  Finally, Dell agreed to replace it.  The problem is the process took easily over 12 hours in what was at best a one hour call because no one within the Dell "customer service" framework had the authority (power) to give me what I knew to be fact--replacement of a lemon computer.  My phone support hell went from the Philippines to Canada to India to Malaysia to God knows where.  It wasn't until I got the attention of the president, Michael Dell, that things changed (I sent him an email and he answered it and expedited things).

Bottom line--the Chamber exists because of you.  Success is not mutually exclusive in our world.
