FORT LAUDERDALE—The Board of Directors of the largest organization of businesses in Broward County, Fla., has approved a resolution in support of marriage equality, adding yet another collective voice on this important economic issue.

“Marriage equality makes great business sense for our state and our community,” said Dan Lindblade, president and CEO of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, with 1,400 member businesses.  “Simplification of benefits administration, a competitive edge on hiring top talent, growing an already diverse and strong tourism marketplace, and protecting the strong economic engine related to gay and gay-friendly businesses are just a few reasons why we support this reform.”

The Chamber intends to contact and inform appropriate organizations and individuals regarding its position as government and the courts continue to work on the issue.

This significant resolution was initially proposed by the Chamber’s Gay and Lesbian Business Exchange (GLBX), a council within the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce.  With nearly 200 active members, GLBX is one of the Chamber’s most active councils and is chaired by Chad Thilborger of The Whole Heap.

“We are thrilled to be the first integrated Chamber to bring this resolution forward and anticipate others to participate,” Thilborger said.

Whereas, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce supports inclusiveness and diversity in all workplaces; and

Whereas, marriage equality provides for standardized definitions to simplify administration of benefits offered to employees, spouses and families; and

Whereas, marriage equality improves recruiting efforts for Florida and greater Fort Lauderdale businesses, which compete against companies nationwide that have extended civil marriage rights to same-sex couples; and

Whereas, businesses represented in the Chamber's membership will directly benefit from marriage equality through the ability to attract top talent and improve Greater Fort Lauderdale's ability to market itself as a tourist destination and attraction to new business relocating to Florida; and

Whereas, marriage equality represents billions of dollars to Broward County's economy.

Now, therefore, let it be resolved that the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce supports marriage equality in the State of Florida.
