Chef Andres Avayú and Piccolo Ristorante are thrilled to announce their 2nd Lionfish Tasting Dinner with Reef.org on Wednesday June 22nd, 2016. The REEF organization is a local nonprofit group, located in Key Largo that seeks to conserve marine ecosystems by educating, enlisting and enabling divers and other marine enthusiasts to become active ocean stewards and citizen scientists.
This event, hosted at Piccolo Ristorante, will give attendees the opportunity to learn more about the Lionfish invasion and also taste a variety of dishes prepared by Chef Avayú. REEF organization will also have a few representatives in attendance to offer a short but informative presentation on lionfish and the danger they pose to our reefs. “Eat ‘em to beat ‘em” is a common phrase when discussing lionfish. Lionfish are a delicious, white fish, similar to hogfish or grouper. For this event, Chef Avayú has created a 5-course tapas style menu. The menu will include a Smoked Fish Dip, a “Surf & Turf”, Blackened Lionfish Taco with Tropical Salsa, IPA Lionfish on Steamed Rice, and last year’s favorite the Lionfish Corndog. According to Chef Avayú, “a tapas style tasting is the perfect way to introduce people to the wide variety of ways lionfish can be prepared. And the more comfortable people are eating lionfish, the more progress we can make in getting them off of our reefs”.
