FAB-ulous News Update:
Broward College Food Arts Business
Center in Downtown Oakland Park

The Downtown Culinary Arts District will soon welcome culinary, art and business students from Broward College. At the August 27th Board of Trustees meeting, Broward College agreed to move forward with plans to establish a FAB (Food Arts Business) Center in a nearly 50,000 square foot building at 1299 E. Oakland Park Boulevard. A Culinary/Hospitality School has been targeted for the location since 2012 as part of the City’s Strategic Action Plan and downtown branding.
“We could not be happier with all that is happening in the Downtown Oakland Park Culinary Arts District,” said Mayor John Adornato III. “With the anchors of our district rapidly coming into place, we expect to see the rest of the area begin to thrive with new culinary-related businesses and Broward College will be the perfect addition to energize our Downtown redevelopment.”

Broward College anticipates the new campus will be open for the fall 2014 term.

 City Election Results

 The City of Oakland Park held its Municipal Election this past Tuesday, March 12th. The ballot included six (6) Referenda questions. Tim Lonergan won Seat 5 with 57.66 percent of the vote and Sara Guevrekian won Seat 1 with 50.36 percent of the vote. Each of the Referenda questions were approved by a wide margin. The 2013-2014 City Commission is comprised of:


  • Mayor John Adornato III
  • Vice Mayor Shari McCartney
  • Commissioner Jed Shank
  • Commissioner Tim Lonergan
  • Commissioner Sara Guevrekian


The Organization Meeting for the 2013-2014 City Commission is Wednesday, March 20th at 6:30 p.m. in the City Commission Chambers at Oakland Park City Hall. A link to the complete agenda and backup documentation is posted on the City’s homepage

 Captain Allan Hubrig Appointed
BSO/Oakland Park District Chief

In a February 25th memo to the City Commission, City Manager John Stunson announced the promotion of Captain Allan “Al” Hubrig to District Chief for the City of Oakland Park.

“In 2004, I came to the City of Oakland Park as a lieutenant and found a warm welcome from a group of citizens and city staff members truly dedicated to improving the city,” Captain Hubrig stated. “During my years here, I have witnessed a passion and a hometown spirit which is unique to the City of Oakland Park. The support the community and city staff has given me is without equal. I am deeply honored to have been selected by the city and Sheriff Scott Israel to continue to serve the citizens of Oakland Park. As captain, I will be friendly, courteous, reliable and responsive to the citizens of this great community.”
Captain Hubrig was selected from a field of candidates following the recent retirement of John Bukata.
